MAPPING

Mapping in design refers to with the way that the controls of a product are laid out in relation to the product's function.

User Interface Design (or UI) is rapidly becoming a major branch of design alongside User Experience Design (UX) especially in the design of apps and touchscreen interfaces.

UI design done well makes products a pleasure to use, whilst UI done badly can make using a product frustrating and time consuming, which will result in sub-optimal performance, or even danger and injury if it creates hazards.
