PROCESS,  SKILLSET,  or  MINDSET?

Design is a simultaneously a PROCESS, and a SKILLSET, and a MINDSET:
• Design may be seen as a series of useful processes to follow, repeat and loop back on.
• A designer needs a wide range of multidisciplinary skills  and the will to take risks in applying making skills and thinking skills in original ways.
• At the same time design is also a creative mindset of openness to new experience, in making new discoveries, combining elements, and making decisions.

DESCRIBING DESIGN

Design is...

"... a plan for arranging elements in such a way as to accomplish a particular purpose."

"Design is not just a visual thing, it's a thought process, it's a skill. Ultimately design is a tool to enhance our humanity: It's a frame for life."     Ilse Crawford

"Empathy is a cornerstone of design. From that process of interrogation and empathy- that's when the creative process kicks in."       Ilse Crawford

Iterative Design is...

"The continuous, fluid, development and evolution of solutions to design problems, using any useful information, method. or medium to respond to the challenge in hand.”      AllDesign

Human Centred Design is...

"Begin by developing your relationship, understanding of, and empathy for the user. Then let that be the ultimate guide for all of your creativity and decision making at every stage of the process. Focus on the underlying problems not the symptoms and understand that everything is part of a system- if you solve one problem you create a change in the system. Also understand that you will never get it right first time so iterate and test with the user right from the start.”      AllDesign

The quality of CREATIVITY within the design process will be defined by openness to experience at each stage of thinking, whether divergent or convergent.

THE GOOD, THE BAD & THE UGLY

Good design is...

Good design improves the quality of human life, now and in the long term.

Good design brings freedom.

Good design is enabling.

Good design brings clarity and ease.

Good design brings wholeness.

"Good design depends on the harmony established between the form of an object and it's use" (Max Bill- Founder of the Ulm School of Design. 1953)

Bad design is...

"Bad design is a form of pollution"

Bad design consumes time, resources, money and the human spirit:

Bad design enslaves.

Bad design makes a problem worse or replaces one problem with another.

Bad design is destructive.

Bad design is offensive in purpose, use and effect.

"Good design is like a refrigerator - when it works no-one notices, but when it doesn't it sure stinks!"   Irene Au - Interaction Design Foundation
